I'm going in

‘I’m going in’ was the phrase used by the shooter as he prepared his arsenal of guns to mow down innocent men and women in a synagogue in Pittsburgh recently. 

It is a phrase used in war- was that what he thought he was fighting, a war against the Jews; a people who have espoused peace for over seven thousand years; a people who have been persecuted, discriminated against and the final infamy, gassed and incinerated in the worst atrocities the world had ever seen?

How had he reached that point in his life? What had convinced a fellow American that to kill innocent people at prayer was in some way making the world a better place. Call him bigoted, insane any word to avoid saying the truth that he like millions of others had been fed a diet of hate and blame against anyone who is ‘other’- other in colour creed or belief. Yet he was a product of a nation built on ‘other’, created from the hopes and dreams of millions of immigrants displaced by the very forces that he is now identifying with.

In the First World War (1914-1918) twenty million people were killed and 21 million were wounded.  By 1932,14 years later Fascism had arisen in Germany under Hitler and seven years later, the Second World War (1939-1945) had broken out, killing 60 million people.

Since 1945- At the end of World War Two, no conflict has occurred in Europe, a period of seventy-three years of peace. Is this a coincidence or did the establishment of the EU play a pivotal role?

There can be no doubt that the close ties between the members of the EU based on law, trade and cooperation is the deciding factor.

But once again Fascist movements are arising in Germany, France, and many other EU countries. Anti-Semitism, a barometer of tolerance is reaching extreme proportions.

The UK’s break from Europe could herald a cascade of leavers-other countries are already making noises in this direction. This could lead to only one result- a Third World War. With the sophisticated weapons including the nuclear bomb available, the mortality figures would be astronomically threatening the very existence of mankind.

            

It’s not too late for the UK to step back from the brink and learn the lessons of history.

2017 Nobel Peace Prize awarded for abolition of Nuclear weapons

The award of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize to an organization working for the abolition of all nuclear weapons reflects the hopes of millions of people around the world, that one day these weapons, weapons that are capable of destroying the world will be consigned to history. 

        The fact that the president of the USA, the most powerful nation in the world continues to support them will be seen as a moment of shame in their past.

       Future generations will look back and wonder how a nation guided by a Constitution of the founding fathers could have sunk so low as to believe that ‘war, war, war,’ was better than ‘jaw, jaw, jaw’ to paraphrase Winston Churchill, one the worlds greatest leaders
